Find Happiness Being Single For The Holidays

If you’re too wrapped up in trying to figure out your own source of sadness, you’ll miss the opportunity to connect with those who are spreading the joy.

Holidays are not necessarily fun for those of us who are single. We look forward to creating memories, and share experiences with loved ones other than our parents and siblings.

If you've noted your own tendency toward  a "blue" Christmas, here are six tips for finding peace, love, and happiness during the holidays:

Don’t Expect Anything

It’s when we anticipate too much that we are disappointed with the reality of any situation. Instead, go to holiday gatherings with no expectations – great or otherwise – and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Look Outward, Not Inward

If you’re too wrapped up in trying to figure out your own source of sadness, you’ll miss the opportunity to connect with those who are spreading the joy. Open your eyes, and open your heart, too.

Give Without Expecting To Get Something In Return

Who’s a better shopper isn’t the issue here. It’s who’s a better (fill in the blank) friend, sister, daughter, aunt... Your deeds mean more to those around you than anything you can purchase and put under the tree, so show a little kindness.

Don’t Dwell On The Past, But Look Toward The Future

Don’t allow yourself to be haunted by bad memories of holidays gone haywire. Instead, take a memory that makes you laugh or smile, and use it as the catalyst for a wonderful day. Best yet, go out and make a new happy memory.

Don’t Internalize The Angst Of Others

If, in the past, family stress has been the hallmark of your holiday, do something different. Make your own traditions which put you in a better place, literally and figuratively, and certainly a better frame of mind.

Let Your Positive Outlook Be Reflected In Your Smile

This holiday season, once you find the balance you seek, share it with others. All it takes is a wider smile, kinder words, and a few random acts of sweetness. Others will bask in your joy, and reflect their toward you, too.
